computer running slow - change of AntiVirus

Unread postby carol21 » July 10th, 2009, 5:06 pm

Hi, and thanks for taking the time to look at this for me.

I've been experiencing slow performance as of late, and my boyfriend is training here.

He took a look, but was not confident in carying out any fixes and advised me to come and seek help here.

He's already removed AVG using the AVG uninstaller, done a clean with CCleaner, and installed Avast.
Avast has done a boot time scan, but did not find anything.

He says there is remanants of an old Norton install that should be cleaned out, and theres some entries in the HijackThis log he's not sure about.

We also have a problem with firefox still looking for the AVG toolbar, but not finding it. its currently disabled in the add-ons section, but the uninstall button is greyed out.

I had P2P software on this laptop a while ago, but since uninstalled it, so its ok to remove any further signs of P2P if found.

Obviously, the Laptop is an Acer, Runs Vista 32bit and has service pack 1.

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal. My nickname is Cyborg, and I will be helping you in removing the malware infections in your computer.
Before we start disinfecting your computer, please note all the following points :
  • Please note that it is important that you following all my instructions carefully.
  • Please do not fix anything prior to notifying me as it could render your system in an unstable state.
  • Please make sure that you are the administrator of the system which I am going to disinfect.
  • If you are receiving help from elsewhere, please notify me about it.

I am currently going through your log, and will get back to you as soon as I can.

Please note that I am currently under training, and all my fixes are being checked by an expert to confirm that they are in order, so there may be slight delays in replies due to this, please bear with us.

Hi,

i downloaded to desktop as asked, and ran the tool.

the first time the tool ran, it stalled for over 15 mins at the section where it creates the logs. I had to force a reboot to get the pc to respond.

the second time i ran it, it seemed to complete.

the only window that opened was log.txt
There was no sign of info.txt

I did a search using vistas search on the start menu for info.txt but no results displayed.

here is the contents of log.txt:

Re: computer running slow - change of AntiVirus

Unread postby Cyborg » July 17th, 2009, 5:50 am

Hi Carol :),

I see no active infections in your computer. However we need to confirm that by using an online scanner.

Before that, please uninstall the Nortan leftovers :
  • Please go to Control Panel and open, "Add/Remove Programs".
  • Locate LiveUpdate 3.2 and click on the button, "Change/Remove". Please repeat this step for LiveUpdate Notice.
  • Reboot your computer and do the rest of the fix that follows.

Online Scan

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner
Click Scan Now and Accept the agreement. You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the contents of the log here.

I started to remove Liveupdate 3.2 and the uninstaller asked me if i wanted to continue, as other norton products have been detected. I clicked "No" to that and went on to uninstall the other Live Update Notice which uninstalled ok.
I then went back to the first, which displayed the same warning again, but uninstalled successfully anyway.

I'm about to reboot now and follow the rest of the instruction, just wanted to let you know.

Ok, i'm having problems with this scan.

I've chose to run firefox as administrator, disabled Avast as instructed on the webpage and accepted both the applet install and the agreement.

the following is displayed after a 'failed' pop-up.
Please wait until the program's applet has been loaded, and a Java plug-in security warning message has appeared. If you click Cancel, you'll need to close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to continue installation

Starting Java applet has failed! Please go online to use this program.

I can confirm that internet is available at this time.

i have also tried with Avast enabled, and the result is the same.

Any Advice?

Hi Carol,

Please use this online scanner instead :

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

Hi Carol :),

Now, please open a new Notepad file by clicking on Start and then selecting Run. Type notepad and press enter; copy paste the following.
Click Edit and deselect, Word Wrap if it is checked.

Now, please copy the following code into your clipboard by clicking Select All here and pressing Ctrl+C.
Go to the notepad file and press Ctrl+V.

Code: Select all
@echo off
del /f /q C:\Users\carol\Desktop\Bonus Tracks\05 Until U Love Me.mp3
echo File Deletion > C:\Users\carol\Desktop\success.txt
echo. >> C:\Users\carol\Desktop\success.txt
if exist C:\Users\carol\Desktop\Bonus Tracks\05 Until U Love Me.mp3 echo ((Unsuccessful)) >> C:\Users\carol\Desktop\success.txt
if not exist C:\Users\carol\Desktop\Bonus Tracks\05 Until U Love Me.mp3 echo ((Successful)) >> C:\Users\carol\Desktop\success.txt
start notepad C:\Users\carol\Desktop\success.txt

and click on File and then on, Save As....
Under Save as type : select, "All Files(*.*)".
Clear everything under File name and type, "Fix.bat" and click on Save.
Please save this file in the desktop

Close all open windows and then go to the location where you saved the file and double click on it.
A command prompt window will flash, do not get alarmed, this is perfectly normal.

Please re-use these instructions and post a new RSIT log :

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
  • log.txt will be opened maximized
  • Please post the contents of log.txt

SUMMARY

Please respond with the following :

  • success.txt (available from desktop, although it will open up automatically)
  • log.txt from RSIT
