Pls help me remove a Trojan Horse utility.dll

Unread postby hegee » July 13th, 2009, 2:39 pm

My Symantec Antivirus found a Trojan Horse, filename utility.dll, originally found in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\nsp608.tmp\ and C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\nsb5FD.tmp\

It cannot be removed by Symantec for some reason but it says it is quarantined.

I searched online and I think it came from when I tried to uninstall AIM, apparently this uninstall can contain viruses.

Here is my hijackthis log, please let me know if you see any other problems, besides the Trojan Horse! Thanks so much - Heather -

It is the computer which is assigned to me at the University. Our IT department tried to remove it but was unsuccessful. So, now I'm just stuck with it, but I don't want it copied to my hard drive when I back up my computer, therefore I need to remove it. I have a few more years a the university so I cannot just go on with it on my computer! Pls help.

Hi :)

If I may draw your attention to this portion from the forum's policy:

We do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.

So with regard to the aforementioned guidelines the computer in question does fall in to the category mentioned.

I will add further I personally do not provide assistance in cleaning business or corporate computers. There could be legal issues if sensitive information is disclosed via the logs or if the infection or cleanup process damages company files. It is difficult to distinguish between well intentioned "fixing" by the end user and hacking the system. The damage that can be done to a business infrastructure is immense. If it is a networked computer, it is likely that more than one machine is infected. Thus, the company IT Department needs to be involved in the cleanup process.

Most of the tools used in the cleanup process are not "enterprise" versions and have only been tested on home computers. The tools could make policy or other setting changes that could conflict with the company policy. In addition, the software and other tools used in the cleanup process are free for personal use where the computer owner is accepting the risk. Not only are employees not in a position to accept such liability for company property, but we cannot knowingly abuse the terms of use of the software developers and vendors who provide the tools.

My advice is you do appraise your University's IT Department again of this situation and good luck for the future outcome.

As the computer in question belongs to an enterprise or business entity, rather than a private individual who utilizes it for home use, it falls outside the scope of this forum. Therefore, this topic is now closed.
