vimax ads appearing constantly & search engines hijacked

Unread postby cychristian » August 8th, 2009, 3:02 pm

I'm not sure I copied this correctly. I've got an ad that pops up on quite a few sites for a pill called Vimax. Also my search engines are being redirected to shopping sites instead of what I'm searching for. I've downloaded some different cleaning software, but it doesn't seem to let them load.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you to get rid of whatever you have on your computer (don't worry, just the malware stuff :D). However, it is important to take note of the following:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please try to reply within three days - failure to do so might result in this thread being archived before we have finished cleaning you up. :o
If you need more time than that, all you need to do is tell me. ;)
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

Disable Spyware Doctor.

please Disable Spyware Doctor as it may interfere with repairs.

      1.Open Spyware Doctor
2.click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
      3.Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
please remember to reactivate it when we are finished

Fixing malicious lines in Hijackthis
You must fix some malicious entries using Hijackthis.

  • Start HijackThis
  • Click Do a system scan only
  • Put a check next to the following items. If one of them isn't present, don't worry, just proceed to the next one.
      O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
      O2 - BHO: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
      O3 - Toolbar: AVG Security Toolbar - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\AVGTOO~1.DLL (file missing)
      O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgpp.dll (file missing)
  • Make sure that all other open windows are closed!
  • Press Fix checked.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

Hi OD!

First of all, thanks for the help. Here's what happened when I followed the instructions.

I can't open Spyware Doctor. It tells me I need to do automatic updates, when I try it says can't find page, or something similar.

I completed the system scan and followed instructions, everything ok there.

I can't link to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware download site. It says IE explorer can't open or find page, not sure which. I'm guessing that whatever won't let me update Spyware Doctor is keeping me from linking to your Anit-Malware software. It also will not let me download Spybot. I don't know what you think of that program, but I've used it before on my other computer and never had a problem like I've got now. I also can't update Ad-Aware.

So, that's where I am now. What's my next step.

Thanks

Cy

Hi Cy :)

This is actually good news because it means I know what's wrong with the computer :)
It is also bad news, because if I'm right I'll have some bad news for you :(
Because if i'm right, you have been infected by a program which can monitor keystrokes and give its creator direct access to your computer. If I'm right, this means that your personal data may be at risk.

Let's run a test to be sure.

GMER
Do not touch the computer while GMER is running! If you do, it'll go completely unresponsive and you'll have to shut it down using the power switch. Just don't touch the PC while GMER is working.
Go here: http://www.gmer.net/#files
Click the button "Download EXE"
Save it to your desktop
  • Double click the file you downloaded to run it.
  • Select the Rootkit tab.
  • On the right hand side, check all the items to be scanned, but leave Show All box unchecked.
  • Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.
  • Open Notepad or a similar text editor.
  • Paste the clipboard contents into the text editor.
  • Save the GMER scan log and post it in your next reply.
  • Close GMER.

If you couldn't download the file, please run a full scan with Spyware Doctor and let it remove what it finds. It should pick up the infection I think you have. Post the log it makes.
