Virut cf and backdoortidserv!inf damage

Unread postby jazzsinger98 » October 3rd, 2009, 8:14 pm

My boyfriend was using my computer without my permission and ended up installing a virus from a bit torrent he was getting. The antivirus I was using was not renewed at that time and we ended up getting a plethora of viruses and spyware. I have worked now for two weeks reading and trying to figure out how to get rid of all of the damage that has been done to my computer. He tried to fix it before I took over and Im not sure what all he did besides removing the viruses the program installed with Avira and Bullguard. Can you please help me and let me know if it is clean or not. Thank you so much for your help.

I have used the following techniques up to this point to try and clean it up. I ran both cleaners, turned off the system restore and ran all of the antiviruses in safe mode. I have ran the superantispyware and monitored the Windows system32 folders for tmp and sqm files that were downloaded and redownload evertime we restart the computer. We had the virut CF virus and backdoortidserv!inf and whatever they did killed most of the uninstall programs on my computer programs. It also modified the registry and has compromised the windows operating system. If you would like, I can attatch some logfiles of what we initially took off the computer but I dont know if it will be all of them or not. He did alot of stuff before I got home from work to stop him. I would also like to know if there is a way to fix the system files without reformatting the hard drive. My OS came pre-installed and I just have the recovery disks. Would obtaining my licence code and using a friends installation disks work? Also I installed malwarebites, but the program will not load and gives me an error both times I tried to install and reinstall it. Initially the virus also hacked my ports and wouldnt let me access any antivirus websites or forums. The ones we obtained were from a thumbdrive downloaded at the library and purchased. There is so much I dont understand about computers so hopefully I havent ruined my chance of fixing this.

Disable system restore
CCleaner
SuperAntiSpyWare
Avira Antivirus
Bullguard
Norton Antivirus
Spybot
Advance Registry Optimizer (sammsoft)

jazzsinger98,
Sorry for the bad news, but in general Virut and Sality infections cannot really be fixed.
They change so many system files and registry entries, that finding them all and fixing them is impractical, if not impossible.

Your only recourse is really this kind of sequence:
Disconnect the infected PC from the Internet.
From a clean computer, change *ALL* of your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
Then, also from a clean machine, download a free antivirus installer, like one of these:
Microsoft Security Essentials here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Avast Home Edition from here : http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
AntiVir Free from here : http://www.free-av.com/
Burn the antivirus installer to a CD so you can install it before you reconnect to the internet.

Then You need to (still offline) run your system recovery disk and restore the system to exactly the way it was when you bought it.
After the Recovery is complete, use add/remove to remove any pre-installed Antivirus applications.
Then plug in the CD you burned and install the free Antivirus.
Then you can reconnect the PC to the Internet, and leave it on so it can get all the Microsft Updates for Windows.

uTorrent file sharing can produce horrendous results, as it unfortunately has for you.
Good luck,

I read on another forum that I should be able to run a system "repair" from a installation disk. Do you think that this is possible so long as I have my licence? I am currently running Windows XP pro Media Center edition. I have backed up my music and pictures, but I have several programs that I purchased from websites and I am afraid I might not be able to keep them as I dont know how to distinguish what was compromised and what wasnt. I do not want to keep anything that might reinfect my repaired system. Is there a way to tell which programs will need to be repaired or reinstalled?

Still trying for damage control, sigh...

You can run a system "repair" from the disk, but with this infection, I wouldn't even think of it.
The chances of a repair install fixing this machine are almost zero.
You should run the complete restore back to its original condition.
That will mean losing the installed programs you have added.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's absolutely my best advice.

As the resolution of this issue requires a reformat, and there appear to be no further questions regarding that process, this topic is now closed.
