IE7 Default page hijacked

Unread postby porter » November 28th, 2009, 12:24 am

My IE7 default page has been hijacked by Yifawatch.net. I haven't noticed any other effects. I've done a full scan with a freshly updated Malwarebytes, which found nothing!! I always have Norton and Windows Firewall on an install all Windows updates. Here is my Hijack log. Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks for the help xixo_12. I'll work on this after work tonight. To add to my woes, Norton found a security risk last night (Hackertool.kit) and I read that if this is found that the computer is already under full control from a hacker. Also the HiJackThis list I posted was the initial log and I had let HiJack this repair the first 5 or 6 lines (RO) of the list before reading on a forum to not do let HiJackThis do anything. So I will also post the most up to date log as well. Thanks.

I notice that an earlier comment by another user has been removed. This person had directed me to remove msnconfig.exe from the registry and System32 in safe mode but when I tried that msnconfig did not show up. When I rebooted in normal mode hooked up then it did show up.

Hi,
I notice that an earlier comment by another user has been removed.

I should redirect you to this page : http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38#p38
I hope you understand why it's removed.

Next,
BACKDOOR TROJAN
I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Your computer is infected with BACKDOOR TROJAN. Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victims machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, Backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer, change settings on the computer and more. Please read this article by Roger A. Grimes on Remote Access Trojans it will give you an idea of the severity of the type of infection you have.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all youraccount numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Because of the severity and the capabilities of this type of virus, (it cannot be known what changes to your system it has made or if it opened up other ways into your system) The only responsible course of action I can advise is to reformat your computer and reinstall windows.

Yikes! Thanks for the help and information. I've isolated the computer and changed passwords from a secure one. I'll reformat as you suggested. One problem that I'm not sure how to overcome is that my AV program was a download so how can I go on the internet to download it without any protection? Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the advice. I think my Windows XP CD may not even be SP2 so I won't have a good firewall after reformatting. I'll copy and load Malwarebytes and one of the firewall programs before going back online and downloading Norton. I noticed the Norton AV is not recommended on this site, or other technical sites. Does anyone NOT recommend Norton? Considering I was hacked with it in place I assume that it's not very good. Is this correct?

Thanks again for all of your help.

PS from one of the articles you recommended I'm assuming I was infected with a 'drive-by' virus.

Hi,

That's why I gave the instruction to update your windows. So you will have the latest Service Pack.

Norton is a paid programs.
Either you are noticed or not, my advice is on a free programs, which is you can get the free protection from antivirus IF you can't afford to pay for it.
But it's up to your own preferences.

Thanks again for all of your help.

You're welcome :) Glad we could help.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood something in one of the advice links. I thought it said that there was only a firewall starting with SP2 but it said that the firewall is defaulted to ON starting with SP2. I always kept my Windows up to date.

If your CD is not XP SP2, you can update to the latest SP3 as I mentioned previously. Then you will have windows firewall built in enable. ;)

After you're done with updating and keep some recommended programs running, you can proceed to surf the net without worries. ;)

You can verify the Windows Firewall is turned ON via control panel
Here is the INFO for your reference.

Any question again? :)
