Google search redirecting problem Windows Update not workin

Unread postby icecube964 » January 23rd, 2010, 5:50 pm

I have been having a lot of problems with my computer for the last 6 months, i recently discovered this site http://www.google.com/support/websearch ... nswer=8091 which describes the exact problems i am having. A lot of my microsoft services have also stopped working including Windows Update and chkdsk. I use AVG Anti-virus and this finds nothing, i used GMER Anti-Rootkit and this found an ESQUL infection See http://www.im-infected.com/trojan/rootk ... esqul.html. I deleted this and hoped that it would fix all my problems but it didnt.

All this led me to use HijackThis and to this website. I hope you can help, here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log and a fresh Uninstall List

Re: Google search redirecting problem Windows Update not workin

Unread postby km2357 » January 31st, 2010, 1:51 pm

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 5.1.1

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

Re: Google search redirecting problem Windows Update not workin

Unread postby km2357 » February 3rd, 2010, 3:36 pm

Step # 1 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

If you still have GMER on your computer, please delete it and download and run the latest version using the instructions below:

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click No.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
  • Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Looking at your DDS logs, I see that another P2P program is installed/already has been installed on your computer. Please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall µTorrent from your computer.

Once µTorrent has been uninstalled, we'll continue.

Since you're having troubles with GMER, lets try another rootkit scanner in its place:

Step # 1 Download and run SysProt

Download SysProt Antirootkit from the link below (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).

http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

  • Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.
  • Click on the Log tab.
  • In the Write to log box select the following items only:
      Process
      Kernel Modes
      SSDT
      Kernel Hooks
      Hidden Files
  • Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
  • After a few seconds a new window should appear.
  • Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
  • When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
  • The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I tried to use Combofix but before it starts it says it found a CD Emulator Driver running and restarted the computer. Combofix then ran as normal up to this stage:

When it got to "Completed Stage 50" it then says "Deleting files!" and reboots the machine and does nothing on restart so I never got the Combofix log.

I got an error report to send to microsoft and after i sent it I got a website which explains that it rebooted due to a driver issue. I am not sure if it is the CD Emulator driver which I mentioned earlier.

I tried Combofix 3 times and had the same problem every time.

Ok, let's try this:

First, delete ComboFix.exe from your computer and download the latest version from one of the links below:

Link 1
Link 2

Be sure to save it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Next, before you run ComboFIx, do the following:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Once Defogger has finished running and your machine has booted back up, then try running ComboFix again. If CF sucessfully completes its run, then post the ComboFix Log in your next post/reply.

=====================

If after ComboFix has run and you need to reenable your CD Emulation program/driver, then do the following:

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

If you don't need it reenable, leave the CD Emulation driver disabled.
