Malware? IE Explorer very slow/crashing

Unread postby juliend » March 27th, 2010, 10:21 am

Hi and thank you for taking time reading through my post, and maybe help me to check my computer.

Description of the problem

Here are the strange things I have noticed with my computer since the beginning of the week:
- IE Explorer is crashing repeatedly
- I cannot access Documents and Settings foler anymore ("Locked").
I have downloaded and tried Unlocker programme, but it does not help.
- I have the feeling that many duplicates of processes are running, while they should not (it is only my feeling, as I know it could be normal). At some point I saw it running at 99 processes, which is highly suspicious to me.

Norton Antivirus is running with the computer as it was installed when I purchased the computer last September 2009 (VAIO, running Vista).
After having encountered trouble this week, I have downloaded and installed AVG, which I always used in the past with great satisfaction (I probably will uninstall Norton and pay for AVG in the soon future, especially as Norton did not help me).
By looking around, I also learned about Windows Defender - it was on my system but disabled. I enabled it.
In the recent days, I have run scans (fast, full and rootkit scans) with Windows Defender, Norton and AVG.
The only problems I could find was 3 keys under Norton files in the AVG full scan (issues I fixed). All the rest is telling me my computer is fine.
I know that having more than 1 antivirus is not a good thing, and I am prepared to keep only AVG - or follow any other recommendation you may have.

Looking for additional help on Internet, Google led me to HijackThis (which I had used in the past as well), so I downloaded it and tried it. Hijack This page has led me to this forum.
I have read stickies and recommendations - and here I am posting in this forum :)

One last thing, I suspect that the cause comes from a website. I remember having a webpage opening and stayed blank - until I closed it. That is the only strange thing I can remember int he past 2 weeks.

***Note : Windows Vista require user to right click > Run as Administrator to use the tools.

First,
Multiple Anti-virus Programs
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.

Unread postby juliend » April 2nd, 2010, 8:00 am

Hi,
Let's proceed.

First,
Discussion.
I'm in doubt. Your Norton working well? If not, I have to recommend other stuff to you.

Next,
Fix entries.
  • Run the HiJack This by right click on the tool > Run as Administrator.
  • Click on Do a system scan only button.
  • Search the entries as below and tick at the small box.
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.mandarintools.com
    O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - (no file)
  • Close any other program and leave HiJackThis program alone.
  • Click Fix checked.

Analyze file(s).
Please visit Jotti.
Click on browse > copy below link (one by one) and paste on the File name box > Click Open:
C:\Windows\ka.ini

  • Press Submit file - this will submit the file for testing.
  • Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the permalink (web address) in your next response.
Example of web address :
Image

Next,
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to the desktop.
  • Right click on mbam-setup.exe > Run as Administrator and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    Image
  • Refer to above image and then click Remove Selected to proceed.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Next,
Checklist.
Please post.
  • Respond to our discussion.
  • Web link (analyse)
  • Content of MBAM log

Thanks for the quick reply xixo_12!
I did as you asked me to do, and I could delete all the entries you mentioned in your post.
I could not get an analysis of the file you requested with Jotti - it told me the file was empty after I pushed "Submit", so I had no particular analyse or link.
For MBAM, I ran only C drive (I noticed some other drives/letters) - I hope it was OK to do so.

Discussion

I think Norton is running well, but I don't really like Norton.
It was pre-installed on my VAIO, with a 1-year free subsription (that is, until August 2010).
I never touched anything and let run Norton as it was automatically doing it, but I was planning to get a free anti-virus like AVG and remove Norton.
Maybe you can tell me if my opinion is wrong.

One example I noticed, when I got this malware last week (I think), IE kept crashing, and Norton would not report anything special.
After I installed AVG, it was telling me at some points that IE was trying to access to internet, while I did not touch anything - and by clicking "No", I could notice it was not crashing (I did have a tab appearing with "Connecting..." that I was leaving without touching it).

This is the first time I have had something strange for years, and Norton did not help. But I think it is running fine. I hope it answers your question/doubt, or is there anything else?

Web link (analyse)

As mentioned above, I could not succeed in running the analyse - it mentioned "file empty" and the link in the address bar did not chnage....

Hello xoxi_12 :)

I have run ATF without issues.
Kaperski scan took a long time to complete, and I let it run during the night.
When I looked at my PC this morning, nothing mentioned that the scan had been finished, so I thought it had been aborted with my computer switching mode during the night ("Standby" maybe, I am not sure of the mode).
I think I saw there was one object infected.

So, I reran the scan this morning, and I made sure to follow its progress. The same message appeared, but I think it went until completion this time (last time I checked it was 81% progress).
It might be a good thing to mention in the instructions for the future that the Kaperski scan does not specifically mention that the scan has completed succesfully...
There was no infection whatsoever, so the log was empty, and I have nothing to copy (?!)

I hope this is OK, I feel I might have done not so good for your instructions this time...so apologises if I messed up something.

Antivirus
I will get rid of Norton and will install Avast as per your recommendation.
I did not go on with this, as maybe I should wait to be sure I have gotten rid of anything on my computer first (?)

Computer state

IE seems working fine now.
However, my profile was Administrator before, and I don't seem to have Administrator access anymore.
Documents and settings folder is still locked to me, and there are many things I am seemingly not able to do, with a "access denied" message.
There are only 2 other profiles on my computer (Guest and my wife's one) who are not Administrators.
I think there might be another one I cannot see, which is the one used to set the computer before I got it.
Do you think it is related to the problem I have, and is there a solution for this?
