BV:Autorun-G [Wrm] with RECYCLER folder malware found

Unread postby missingmodule » May 20th, 2010, 5:00 pm

Recently I have had problems when plugging in removable USB devices into my computer. Immediately my Avast 4.8 Home Edition detected a virus saying that it was "BV:Autorun-G [Wrm]".

I looked on other forums/blogs/etc. and they usually suggested things like Disk Disinfector or Flash Disinfector and other types of Removable scanners, but they didn't remove the problem just deactivated it it seemed like.

I tried running MalwareBytes and AVG in safe mode, and activated all hidden/operating system folders in the folder options and saw RECYCLER and System Volume Information in my C: drive. Recycler was present in my removable disk drives and D: drive as well.

While MalwareBytes says it removed the infected files, they are all still there and Avast, AVG have not detected it after that. (I ran AVG on it and uninstalled it when I read that it may get rid of it instead of Avast, however AVG didn't detect anything.) Whenever I unplug and replug a flashdrive it doesn't display the autorun virus indication anymore.

Is there a way to get rid of this worm once and for all? It seems to replicate itself and continue to infect other USB removable devices since it's on my computer itself.

Here's my logfile:

Unread postby melboy » May 23rd, 2010, 3:46 pm

Hi and welcome to the MR forums. :)

I'm melboy and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take note of the following:

  1. I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

NOTE: Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

IMPORTANT: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

========================================================

DDS

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.

Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Link1
Link2
Link3

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. A command window will appear, this is normal.

Image
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please copy & paste the contents of :
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
And post them in your next reply.

DeFogger

Download DeFogger from here and save it to your desktop.

Double click Defogger.exe to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
    See image below
    Image
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSoDs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning -- If you continue to encounter problems, try running GMER in safe mode

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.
In your next reply:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
  3. GMER log

==== End Of File ===========================
-----------------------------

I was NOT able to get the GMER one. I tried unclicking devices, running it with safemode, however after it ran, it would later have an error saying ipoint.exe had an error (that's my intellipoint mouse driver I believe,) and then when I tried saving the file or copying it to put it in a word file, it would say things like "Notification wnd for RNAdmin" warning/error, "Insufficient resources required to run GMER", end program errors with "wscntfy.exe" it's not responding and "explorer.exe" end program errors.

Also when I would click on the start menu, all my programs would be empty as well as most of everything else, docs, settings. So I had to restart or hardboot my computer which I know is definitely not good for it, several times. So I don't know if that really means it crashed or anything but as far as GMER goes, it made my computer especially windows explorer quite unresponsive. Even trying to ctrl alt del and go to the task menu, after I tried saving and some of those errors came up, it wouldn't even show up anymore.

Any ideas on why that might be happening? If there's anything else let me know. Thanks.

Note: Also one thing I've been noticing is that my windows startup sound seems delayed now, my desktop programs would all be on my desktop by the time that the windows startup sound would kick in. I don't know why that is. I tried msconfiging and turning off some unwanted startups.

Yes I read over that again and I apologize for the confusion. I thought it meant not to post topics in various sections of the forum. Yes go ahead and close it.
