Not loading any web pages?

Unread postby LOL =) » August 23rd, 2010, 10:43 am

My name is Amber.

I got this Laptop about two weeks ago. I didn't have any anti virus or anything for it. Just recently, a box has been popping up every time I turn it on. It said something about an 'open source file' and that there was a problem. It was also associated with the free trial of McAfee that came with it, but I had deleted it. Now it no longer pops up, but it still won't connect to any web pages. It connects to the internet though.

I took it to Staples where I got it. They said it was most likely a virus. But their prices to fix it were outrageous.

In addition, I just got Microsoft Security Essentials on my laptop. I ran a scan, but it didn't find anything.

When I ran the HijackThis log, an error popped up. I took a screenshot.

Below is my HijackThis log and Uninstall list. Thank you in advance!

--> Also please note that since my laptop isn't working, I have to use my old computer, a Windows ME. So I pretty much downloaded the program, put it on a zip drive and transferred the info between computers. I hope that's ok.

Hi LOL =),
If you use Limewire for "free" programs, you will not have a good PC for very long.
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program Limewire in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
If you have used this, you can be fairly confident this is a principal reason your computer is infected

It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Bittorrent, Azureus, Limewire, Vuze, Shareaza, Bitlord.
Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files. Some of the recent infections can turn your machine into a doorstop.
It's also very important to avoid any "cracks" or "Keygens" that allow unauthorized use of programs. Besides being illegal, these files also are loaded with "planted" malware.
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click this Entry, and choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:
LimeWire 5.5.10

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
---------------------------------------------
Run CKScanner
Download CKScanner from HERE
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Right-Click CKScanner.exe, choose Run as administrator and click Search For Files.
After a couple minutes or less, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop, give permission if asked, and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( If you can't locate the files, they are in this folder: C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please.

So we are looking for the contents of CKFiles.txt and the contents of the two files from the RSIT Scanner. Use multiple replies if you prefer.

LOL=)
The log you posted was from HiJackThis.

Please run the RSIT Scanner again. This time it will pop up one log only.
When it finishes and pops up in Notepad, click once in the text, select the whole thing with Ctrl+A (simultaneous Ctrl and A keys), Copy to the invisible Windows clipboard using Ctrl+C (simultaneous Ctrl and C keys), and then Come here and click Post Reply reply here. Then paste it all in to the box from the clipboard using Ctrl+V (simultaneous Ctrl and V keys).

LOL,
Let me give you some info you may not be aware of:
You have a Win7 Starter Edition.
----------------------------------------------
About Windows 7 Starter Edition
Windows 7 Starter Edition is included on some Netbooks, to save the manufacturer money on the Operating System.
It does not have the same capability as the other versions of Windows 7, or even the older Windows XP.

A comparison of features in the versions of Windows 7 is here:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/For ... 4fc21c2ac0

The Windows 7 Starter edition has some limitations which may or may not be important to you.
You cannot really customize the desktop.
If you intend to use the machine for things like streaming video, you will not be able to do so.
The Starter edition will not play a movie from its DVD, for example.

Depending on your version and your geographical location, you may be able to use the Win7 Anytime Upgrade.
It is not free, but the cost may be acceptable.
The Anytime Upgrade is also sold in stores and may be sold at discounted prices.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... me-upgrade

Staples US
http://www.staples.com/Microsoft-Window ... 5:CL140504

Most users who upgrade seem to be pleased with the results.
----------------------------------------------
I have some questions for you about what you use:
  • Do you use the Egis Tech MyWinlocker? The MyWinLocker Suite is to encrypt or lock the PC.
  • Do you use the netbook for games? (Acer Game Console -Wild Tangent)
  • It appears you have a Microsoft Office installed. Do you need Microsoft Works also, which is a more restricted version?
  • Do you use or intend to use Norton online for backups?
We can improve the performance some by removing unused programs from starting automatically.
They would still be available, but only from Start, Programs
Any programs you have no intention of using at all can be Uninstalled altogether.

I can help you with some cleanup, whether or not you want me to remove any of those programs.
We will do some detailed check to be sure your computer is not infected with any malware, in any case.

I just wanted to be sure you are aware of the options we have here.
If you can tell me something about any of those four questions, and any comments you may have, that would be helpful.

I don't use the Egis Tech MyWinlocker.
I don't play the Acer games.
I don't have any microsoft programs, but I plan to upgrade from the trials to the full versions of the standard three.
I don't have the full version, I have a trial and I plan to use it.

I will eventually get the full version of windows 7, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

LOL=),
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

eSobi v2
eBay Worldwide
Acer Game Console
Acer Games
MyWinLocker Suite
-->If there are two of these, uninstall each one
MyWinLocker
Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (double-click in XP, or right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents of the new "Uninstall list" into your next reply.

So we are looking for a fresh HiJackThis log and the new Uninstall list contents. Let me know how it goes.

Unless you have serious use for the Inbox Toolbar (it peddles an e-mail service that most posters don't like), I would suggest you Uninstall it.

If you do not intend paying for the Norton Online Backup Service, I would suggest Uninstalling it also.

The names of those two programs as they appear in the Control Panel, Programs and Features, "Uninstall or change a Program" will be:
Inbox Toolbar
Norton Online Backup

Your choice if you want to Uninstall.

I think your machine is OK otherwise, with the limitations mentioned earlier.
The netbook machine itself is fine, but it's limited at present by the Windows software version.

If there are no further items I can help with, you should be OK.

I uninstalled the Inbox Toolbar, but I'll keep the Norton Online Backup for now.

Thank you so much! I was worried that my laptop was toast, but turns out it's fine. ^^; You are a great help, as is this wonderful site, and I hope you have a stellar weekend!
