For years I like so many have been a dummy I guess, paying for this useless service.. I have something going on with my Laptop, and though I'm no Computer Geek I keep getting this pop up McAfee window alerting me that some Trojan has been Deleted and isolated but when I look up that info. on that Trojan it says the thing acts like a an Anti MalWare Scan 2010 and asks you to install something which I don't think I have.

When Contacting McAfee a (Punjabi) speaking person. I couldn't understand a thing said to me, and she basicaly blamed me. I in turn asked if their product and DATS,FIREWALL, ETC. were so good and I don't Surf Porn, Download Games, Music how am I getting this? She forwarded me to a Supv. who also I couldn't understand and asked him does everyone in Santa Clara,CA. offices not speak english? He replied of course they do...We're in India!

If you want to get this matter fixed they want $89.00 on top of the $86.14 I already have paid them for a useless service.

No anti-virus can possibly protect you from everything, nor will a firewall or an anti-malware program. Your constant vigilance is your computer's first line of defense, along with a good anti-virus, firewall and anti-malware program.

Unfortunately, these days it takes a lot more than avoiding porn sites and not downloading games/music to keep your system safe. Even good clean sites can be hacked and bad code planted on them.

I'd like to give a simplified overview of how your defensive systems work.

The average home computer has approximately 64,000 ports through which it can communicate. By default these ports are open and can be used by any programme which cares to access them, either from within the computer or from without. If you were to go online with a computer in this condition you would quickly be attacked and your computer would be infected.

To prevent this you install a Firewall. A firewall will close all open ports and you then open the ones you need by setting "rules" for them according to the instructions supplied with the Firewall programme. Usually you will have ports open for your Internet Browser, your e-mail client, and the update functions for various programmes.

These "open" ports will not be fully accessible, in that they will only allow a communication if it was instigated from within your computer. Any unsolicited communications from outside are blocked.

However if you are tricked into starting the communication, then as far as your Firewall is concerned it is a legit transaction and it will open the port. So by clicking on malicious links, replying to unsolicited e-mails and attachments, and downloading from unsafe sources, you are effectively bypassing any protection your Firewall supplies.

At this point your Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus programmes take over. The real-time-protection in these constantly scan the data stream in your open ports looking for things that match with items in the database they have within them. If they find something then they will alert you, or quarantine it, or delete it, according to the rules set within the programme.

However as you can see, if the database does not contain details of the infection that's attacking you, then your Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware programmes will not protect you. There are new infections (or new variations of old infections) created every day, which is why it's vital to keep your programmes up to date. Even with a fully updated database though, you are still playing catchup, which is why your Firewall, Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programmes cannot ever give you 100% protection.

Adding more and more programmes will not give you more and more protection, it's up to you to take some responsibility for your online actions, and modify them to give your programmes the best chance of protecting you.

Be careful what you click on.

• Don't download anything from a site you do not know and trust. Remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch, if something seems too good to be true it is. Malware purveyors love to offer out freebies as bait knowing full well that one unguarded click is all it takes.
  
• Don't reply to unsolicited e-mails.
  
• Don't open e-mail attachments (even from friends) without checking with the source to ensure they actually sent them.
  
• Don't use P2P file sharing programmes. Even the ones that don't come bundled (and many do) are not safe. By using them you are effectively downloading from an unknown source, with all the dangers described above.

The bottom line is, you can never remove all risk, but you can minimise it by being careful online.

These are some of the windows that keep popping up at random times with sound advertisements and such, I have tried the Avert Stinger which is useless , and all of your little "Trick Programs" like Trojan Hunter, and such proved to do more harm than good and really froze my system and trashed my Favorites Files. This only happens when I start Ie7 Browser. Maybe I should just delete it and reinstall the new IE8 in it's place That should do it!

I got it... I guess that means the original post on Sunday When I first Joined the Board and didn't get any assistantance or feedback shouldn't have been sent to your 72 hour room! OOPS! My Bad!!! In that original post I had a Hijack This Log along with a whole bunch of those sites properties that keep appearing on my screen. I'm just gonna sit back and let the thing do it's damage and live with it, and maybe uninstall IE7 and replace it with IE8 and dump McAfee once and for all!

As you can probably appreciate, we have a great many more requests for help than we have people trained to give it, because of that some people have to wait longer than we'd like them to.

Just to inform any of you folks that may care I solved my problem by first Dumping my IE7, that got rid of all the cookies etc., then I booted I got Rid Of McAfee After paying for their service since 2004 Then Domnloaded IE8 FOLLOWED BY NORTON360 Which took quite a while but cleaned out my system from some strange stuff, and found nearly 75 Critcal updates that for what ever reason my windows auto updater was not diong, I'm not here to advertise DODO But I'll never again contibute one Red Cent to Jonh McAfee's Billions and his lovely Ranch in New Mexico I'm Quite Happy now with Norton 360 and the next time this occurs I'll go with MAC!!!!

Ever Since I dumped McAfee an Installed Norton 360 I've had nothing but great things to say. No problems yet! And Yes!!!! It has picked up an got rid some bugs on its own! McAfee Sure as Heck did not live upto that task... Now I'm not a spokesman or paid by them but if you were boned as I was then I would look into Norton 360

Because any honest job they could likely qualify for wouldn't pay as much as this form of cyber-theft.
