I can't get rid of 'AV System Care' and its pop-ups

Dear friends I have a Toshiba A100 Series laptop with the Windows XP Media Centre Edition operating system. I also have VirusScan anti-virus software running on the computer. Initially, I started getting pop-ups for strange advertisements, and then shortly thereafter a "WARNING" sign came up that said that my computer might be "at risk." It then asked if I wanted to run AVSystemCare software to detect problems. I clicked on Cancel, but it then supposedly run some type of virus scan, which said I have numerous problems. One of the specific pop-ups says: "NOTICE: if your computer is infected, you could suffer data loss, erratic PC behavior, PC freezes and crashes. Detect and remove viruses before they activate themselves on your PC to prevent all these problems. Do you want to install AVSystemCare to scan your PC for malware now? (Recommended)" Since then the above message comes up every time I use Internet Explorer and I keep getting pop-ups all the time until eventually Internet Explor

Hi again

Thanks for that but unfortunately I can't install the update because I do not have the appropriate CD. I bought the laptop from a friend of mine who told me that she gave me all the CD's that came with the laptop (2 of them) but I don't think that those 2 CD's are related to Windows Office. One of them is called "Toshiba Product Recovery" (I don't really know how to use it as it has loads of different files which I do not understand) and the other one is called "Microsoft Works 8.5" which I believe is a program.

What can I do?

Have you tried my first suggestion (downloading the update from the Microsoft site)?

Yes, I did download it and saved it to my C:\ drive but when I try to install it it asks me for the CD for Microsoft publisher 2002 as well (which I do not have).

Thank you very much for that. I just wanted to ask you one last thing before we 'separate'

Do you have any idea about how I got AVSystemcare on my computer in the first place? as I have anti-virus software and I usually run things like Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, etc. And is there anything I can do to avoid having more problems like that in the future? What maintenance do you recommend for my computer? (e.g. which programs should I run often to avoid things like AVSystem?

Prevention

Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:
- Delete Tools - You can now delete the following files/folders:
  - RogueRemover
  - C:\fsbl.exe
  - C:\BFU
- Rehide your System Files
  - Double-click My Computer.
  - Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  - Click the View tab.
  - Put a check next to Hide file extensions for known file types.
  - Under the Hidden files folder, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  - Check Hide protected operating system files.
  - Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
  - Turn off System Restore.
  - On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  - Click Properties
  - Click the System Restore tab
  - Check Turn off System Restore
  - Click Apply, and then click OK
  - Reboot.
  - Turn on System Restore.
  - On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  - Click Properties
  - Click the System Restore tab
  - Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  - Click Apply, and then click OK
  NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis!
- Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  - From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  - Click once on the Security tab.
  - Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  - Click once on the Custom Level button.
    - Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    - Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    - Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    - Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    - Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    - Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    - When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    - If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  - Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
- Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
- Use a Firewall - A firewall is very important for the security of your computer. The Windows Firewall which comes with Service Pack 2 does not monitor outgoing connections, so any malware can 'phone home' without you knowing it. - Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
- Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

- Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  
  Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
- Stand Up and Be Counted!

Thank you for all your suggestions and all your help! I really appreciate the time and effort that you've put into helping me. Thanks for all the tips in your last message, I will try to do what you suggested on a regular basis.

I will definitely register a complaint as I really think that the people behind the infections should be held accountable as they've made my life very difficult for no reason. Don't they have lives to live?
