Am I infected? Scans say no, but computer is having problems

I seem to have a trojan or malware on my computer and I have not been able to fix it. I run AVG free on my computer, download updates frequently and scan fairly routinely. In trying to solve this, I have run Panda, trendmicro, bitdefender, Kaspersky and a couple of other antivirus programs to no avail. I also regularly use ad aware and spybot, and since they did not fix the problem, ran through at least a dozen other such programs, all to no avail. I ran all of these in normal mode, and also as many of them as would operate while in Safe Mode, and still no results. I use zone alarm's free firewall, and according to shieldsup, my ports are all in stealth mode. At start up, all I have checked is zonealarm, avg antivirus,startup monitor, NvCpl and TeaTimer Spybot. I've tried numerous times to remove NvCpl as a startup item, but it ALWAYS re-inserts itself at startup, so not sure if that is related to the problem or not. It stays checked even if I uncheck it and reboot, it always resets it

Hi,

Please open Spybot Search & Destroy.
Click on Recovery on the left.
Check (tick) all items and click on Purge items.
Close Spybot Search & Destroy.

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.

Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Java(TM) 6 Update 3 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
Click here to visit Java's website.
Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5. Click on Download.
Read through the License Agreement and select Accept License Agreement radio button. The page will refresh.
Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language to download it. Save this to a convenient location.
Run this installation to update your Java.

Please post a new HijackThis log after you've updated Java.

Hello

Was out of town for a bit. here is the hijack this log. Also, it was jre 6, update 6 (not 5) when I wnet to the page. And it appears that windows has updated itself after I clikced NOT to update when I shut down my computer. So, wasnted to update you on that. Final note - sometimes my desktop changes itself from the settings I have(ie it rearranges the icons etc on the desktop) At other times, my computer will start up and put itself into safe mode for no apparent reason. The only way I've found to "fix" that is to restart the computer and hope it goes back to my normal settings. Sometimes I only need to restart once, other times several times until it rights itself. I have yet to figure out any sort of pattern or correlation of events to it going into safe mode.

Hi,

Looks like Norton didn't uninstall cleanly. If you've already uninstalled Norton, try the following to remove it completely:

Download and save Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.

Run it to remove Norton. After this, please restart your computer.

hmm, I have no idea what norton I ever had on my computer as I don't like it! Gong to the norton link supplied, it asks me to "Choose your product:

I have a Norton product that was purchased from my Internet Service Provider (ISP)

I have a Norton 2006 product
I have a Norton 2005 or 2004 product
I have a Norton 2003 product
I have Norton Ghost or Norton Save & Restore
I have pcAnywhere or WinFax

How do I tell what norton product I had? I have no clue as I don't recall ever installing anything and not sure if it was preinstalled when I got my comuter and then I uninstalled it? that doesn't sound familiar. Are you able to tell form the hijackthis log what one I had? thanks!

PS I did a search for norton on my computer and nothing comes up for any files

Your log looks fine to me.

Are you still experiencing them (see quote below) ?

Final note - sometimes my desktop changes itself from the settings I have(ie it rearranges the icons etc on the desktop) At other times, my computer will start up and put itself into safe mode for no apparent reason. The only way I've found to "fix" that is to restart the computer and hope it goes back to my normal settings. Sometimes I only need to restart once, other times several times until it rights itself. I have yet to figure out any sort of pattern or correlation of events to it going into safe mode.

The problem with the desktop switching around is very random. I can go weeks without it showing up, then it may happen 2-3 times in a week, then disapear for a while. I am still having the problem with the pages not loading fully/correctly. Wondering if that is a firewall and or AV problem? I keep both up to date. The zonealarm is the free version.

Hi,

You can try clearing your cache. This will let webpages re-load everything again and have an updated cache, rather than using an out-of-date one. The disadvantage is that it can be slow for everything to re-load again.

Click on Start > All Programs > CCleaner > CCleaner.
On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.
On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
Close CCleaner.

As for your desktop problem, I can't tell why that's happening.
