I think there is already an improvement in the performance of my computer. Windows starts up faster, MS Office applications come up in seconds and MatLab and Paint Shop Pro both take a little over half a minute to load (it used to take both almost two minute to start).

Any more suggestions on how to make my computer faster will be welcome, but I think your instructions regarding the antivirus programs did the trick.
