All but one is corrupted.

Do you know anything about the above file?

Not specifically. It might have been created by a legitimate app, but I don't really remember which.
What's the best course of action, at this point?

AFAICT, it was somehow related to a Lotus installation I had but it hasn't been used in quite a while. I'm deleting that one.
Should I delete the other files in the CFSubmit archive?

Hi,

You can delete the CFSubmit archive.

Run ATF Cleaner

If you have deleted ATF Cleaner, you can download it from here again - http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Double click on ATF-Cleaner.exe to run it.

  • Click on Main at the top.
  • Tick all the boxes except the Prefetch and Cookies box.
  • Click on Empty Selected button.


If you use Firefox

  • Click on Firefox at the top.
  • Tick all the boxes except Firefox Cookies and Firefox Saved Passwords.
  • Click on Empty Selected button.


If you use Opera

  • Click on Opera at the top.
  • Tick all the boxes except Opera Cookies and Opera Saved Passwords.
  • Click on Empty Selected button.


Close ATF Cleaner when you are done.

Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  1. Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.
  2. Click on Accept.
  3. It will prompt you to download an ActiveX. Allow it.
  4. After that, you will be prompted to install it.
  5. Once installed, it will start downloading the definitions. This will take some time. At the same time, you may also receive another prompt to install another ActiveX. Allow it again and repeat Step 2.
  6. When the definitions have finished downloading, click Next.
  7. Click on Scan Settings.
  8. Under Scan using the following antivirus database:, choose extended - protect your computer from Spyware, adware, dialers and potentially dangerous software such as remote access utilities, prank programs and jokes. We do not recommend this option to beginners or inexperienced users.
  9. Under Scan options:, check (tick) both boxes.
  10. Click Ok.
  11. Under Please select a target to scan:, click on My Computer. It will start scanning. Please be patient.
  12. Click on Save Report As....
  13. Give this report a name and change the Save as type: to Text file (*.txt) before clicking on Save.
  14. Please post this log in your next reply.

For some reason, the Kaspersky log is extremely large (over 36MB), mostly from a large number of locked files. I tried uploading the zip but even that is too large (about 1MB)

Hi,

A lot of your files can't be scanned.

Are you running any programs when scanning with Kaspersky? Or did you run some other scanners while Kaspersky is running?

Yes. It might be a bit stupid of me but MalwareBytes was running when I started the Kaspersky scan. The second time, though, I only had Kaspersky running, though AVG was still on and I got the same results.
As it takes 5 hours to complete the scan and this one is my only desktop, I didn't want to try many different things.
Should I temporarily disable AVG? Is there a way to only scan the files which were locked?
Also, is it possible that some of these files were locked because they originally came from Mac OS X? All those files from the Firefox Scrapbook extension, for instance. I might actually just back them up on DVD and get them off this desktop.

Hi,

Locked files usually meant they are in used. There could be other reasons, but that's the most common reason.

It's quite unlikely that a computer will have so many files in use. That would most likely mean a scanner at work.

I'm not sure if files from another OS (Mac in your case) would cause these files to be locked.

Let's see if a newer version of Kaspersky is able to do better. :)

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Java(TM) 6 Update 5 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Click here to visit Java's website.
  3. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  4. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  5. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  6. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  7. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  8. Run this installation to update your Java.


Next...

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
      Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
