Opened Explorer, and followed the directions until I got this message:

"You must be logged into an Administrator account to complete this action. Please login to an account that has Administrator rights and re-run this action."

I'm unsure if its referring to IE account or something with Norton. Symantec does not have a "Log in" screen anywhere.

Please save that file to desktop, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.

Let me know how it went :)

I didn't think of opening Explorer as administrator. Anyways, did that, and I got further into the download but discovered another problem. In the download for the Windows Cryptographic screen the download stopped and this message was displayed:

"Automated Task Failed.: Operating System Not Supported."

OK, then we remove it manually after online scan:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
      Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

So let's move next to Norton removal.

Close all open windows including browser.

Copy text below to Notepad and save it as remnorton.bat (save it as all files, *.*)

Yes that is due to vista.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
      Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Logs look pretty good but still two symantec related entries there:

Right-click HijackThis, choose run as administrator, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe
O23 - Service: Symantec IS Password Validation (ISPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\isPwdSvc.exe

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log.
