I don't know anything about validating windows. The computer has been here for about 4 years or so and in that time i haven't validated windows. I don't really know what that means entirely.

Also, I have uninstalled explorer a few weeks ago as I thought it was slowing up my machine. I can download it on my other machine and then transfer it to the machine in question if thats ok?

Now go to Start, Control Panel, Security Center or Start, Settings, Control Panel, Security Center
Check the status of Automatic Updates.
If it's not ON, correct it.
Now leave your machine on a lot and leave it connected to the Internet.
Every time you see the yellow shield icon in the lower right system tray, there are updates to install. Click on the yellow shield, allow the updates, and let them to install.
If it asks whether you want to install the Internet Explorer 8 update, answer YES and install it.

You can also install all of Service Pack 3 from a single download if you wish.
The download is an .ISO file, designed to be directly burned to a CD.

Download SP3 and Burn the Image to a CD
If you have a broadband connection, get the Windows XP Service Pack 3 download from here:

It is an .iso image file, designed to be burned directly onto a CD using your CD burning software.
If that appears successful, unplug your internet connection, disable your Antivirus, and run Setup from the CD
It may take 1-2 hours to install.

If not, you can let the automatic downloads come. You will get some every time you boot up and log on.
