Browser hijacked on virtually new machine

Machine seems to be running well as of this morning, but there was a lot of memory being taken up during mundane surfing (about 30%).

I will do all the instructions when I get home tonight. Do you recommend a certain anti-virus software such as AVG, Avast or Avira etc?

I don't recommend any one particular AV over another as no AV can keep you 100% safe from all threats. I advise only that you install a reputable one that you are comfortable using & keep it up to date.

One more question. I've tried to install AVG free, but my machine won't let me as it says there are still traces of McAfee on there. I've already uninstalled McAfee so I'm guessing it left a lot of files behind. Any idea how to get rid of McAfee completely?

Try running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

• Download the file & save it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/lic ... s/MCPR.exe
  
• Right click MCPR.exe and choose "Run as administrator"
• Follow the prompts and reboot

Note: This will remove all Mcafee products including Mcafee SiteAdvisor.
