Help! My computer is slower than molasses!

I am having problems with my older computer that runs Windows XP. We use it mostly for the kids and for programs that are old enough that they are incompatible with Windows 7. Recently it has begun running so slowly it is unbearable. It took nearly 20 minutes just to open firefox and navigate to this page! And I know it's not our internet connection. I tried downloading and running Malwarebytes, and it found 2 pieces of malware, but the improvement is minimal. Usually what happens is that at some point, the hang time gets so long that I can't stand it any more. Trying to end processes using the task manager is often futile, and I have not been able to shut it down properly at all. I usually have to force shut down by holding down the power button. The last time I tried to shut it down, it began beeping erratically. I tried to note if there was some pattern to the beeping, but there did not seem to be one. One by one, it gave me messages saying it couldn't shut down until such-and-such
