Son's laptop slow, browser hangs, D/Ls sporadic or fail.

My son's laptop is running very slowly, at least online. The browser often hangs and fails to load pages, though sometimes the page will load when you click on X to cancel the page loading. Download speeds are very sporadic and usually fail outright. Many times the first page will load fairly quickly but clicking on any links on that page will fail to load. I have removed Bittorent.
