Malware, Adware, Trojans

Hi folks, I need help. My husband's computer "came down with" several adware infestations, the first sign of which was multiplying browser windows, self-installing programs for online dating, casino's, music, etc. I tried all the usual methods to get rid of the stuff, including Ad-Aware SE Pro and McAfee AntiVirus, both of which came up with results. McAfee AV said the files were protected and couldn't be deleted, Ad-Aware deleted them but they came back. I then tried the Microsoft AntiSpyware program which also supposedly deleted them, but again they came back. After finding this list, I tried Spybot S&D (came up clean) and Trojan Hunter, which found Adware.VX2.110 embedded several places in the system, as well as Adware.WebRebates.113, and 2 SDBots. It seemed to clean the 2 Adware programs, but the VX2 one especially seems to embed itself into a different system file as fast as Trojan Hunter removed them. The two main places are files within explorer.exe and rundll32.exe.

Hi sheturtle. I'm 'KotaGuy. Welcome to Malware Removal.

Please download L2MFix. Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Copy/Paste this into notepad or wordpad for reference during the fix.

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

Make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Run and scan with HijackThis. WIth all browsers and windows closed(even this one), place a check beside the following and fix:

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\tvs

Search for and delete this file:

C:\Windows\180ax.exe

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Reboot Windows normally and post a new HijackThis log please.

Thanks once again. The only thing I wasn't able to do was delete the tvs from the program files folder or the windows\180ax.exe as they weren't there anymore when I went into safe mode.

Some suggestions...

To clean up any remnants that may have been left behind, I suggest doing a couple online virus scans. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

If you don't have them, download Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Visit this page for proper configuration of Spybot and Ad-Aware. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:

• Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
• Click the System Restore tab.
• Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. You can get them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated... so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

If you don't have one, I recommend installing a Firewall. I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and...
