Hello, this is a fresh posting for one that was not replied to within the 10 day limit, I apologise for this but it was during the Xmas/New Year period and I was unable to get on the net.

Close all browsers/windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

can I please tell you what I've done and how the PC is playing up todate?

At present I cannot get the Automatic updates that are waiting to update to update.

These are:

- Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 (SP2) (KB936181)

- Windows malicious software removal tool - May 2007 (KB890830)

- Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 SP1 (KB928366)

- Windows malicious software removal tool Dec 2007 (KB890830)

IE homepage is http://uk.msn.com even though its set to http:google.co.uk in IE itself.

AVG AntiSpyware sometimes says it needs reinstalling due to error 7.5

ReScrubXP could not run, it appeared to have installed ok but when you clicked on 'RegScrubXP Finds Problems', nothing appeared in the white box below and the 'Select all Problems' key was greyed out. Now its found 226 problems and the keys are all grey, as normal.

I've uninstall Nortons 360 that was on the pc when I did the original posting.

They have been replaced with Avast Home (free) and Zone Alarm (free)

Hi,

Kaspersky is flagging the following picture file as infected. Please navigate to the file using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore) and delete it:

C:\Documents and Settings\keiljones\My Documents\My Received Files\picture-512.zip

I've uninstall Nortons 360 that was on the pc when I did the original posting.
There are still some left overs from Norton, but we'll deal with that later.

Let's try to find out why you're not able to update Windows and its components first. We can work on the home page later too.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  • Remove all entries of Runtime Environment (J2SE or JRE) that are listed.
  • Now reboot your computer.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment, and install it to your computer.

In 'Services' something appears to be disabling the Antivirus/malware services sometimes after starting pc (I think).

Although I've reset the Automatic Updates in Services from Disabled to Automatic, I still cannot install the updates I've mentioned earlier.

Hi,

ReScrubXP could not run, it appeared to have installed ok but when you clicked on 'RegScrubXP Finds Problems', nothing appeared in the white box below and the 'Select all Problems' key was greyed out. Now its found 226 problems and the keys are all grey, as normal.


I am very sceptical of registry cleaning tools, including ReScrubXP. They can be hazardous to the operating system. It's possible to remove legitimate entries and render a system unoperable. I would recommend that you do not use them unless you know very well and exactly what you're doing.

Also do the following to check for the remnants of the infection, just in case.

  • Download Navilog1 from one of the following links and save it to your desktop:
    http://pagesperso-orange.fr/il.mafioso/Navifix/Navilog1.exe
    or
    http://il-mafioso.changelog.fr/Navifix/Navilog1.exe
  • Double navilog1.exe and to install it.
Option #1:
  • Once installation is completed, run Navilog1
  • On main menu, choose 1
  • Follow the instructions and wait.
  • Wait for the *** Search completed ….*** message (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
  • Press any key as requested.
  • A new notepad document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
The report fixnavi.txt is also saved in %systemdrive%. (usually C:\)

Hi,

I could not find either C:\Found.0.35 or C:\Found.0.34 to delete them.

I tried the Windows Update fix and it did not work. So I went to the Microsoft website and clicked on the popular updates to run. These appear to have installed and the yellow shield saying updates are available has gone.

Nortons has been re-enabled and the Nortons removal tool has been run.

Hi,

I could not find either C:\Found.0.35 or C:\Found.0.34 to delete them.

You might have to set your system to show hidden files.

Go to My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View>"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK.

Try deleting them now.

** These files are hidden to stop you or anybody else accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you’re done. **

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!

Pc is now running well except for the following, 'Services' to:

Adminworks Agent X6
A-Squared Free Service
AVG Antispyware
Google Updater Service
iPod Service

are still resetting to Disabled at sometime even though I reset them to Automatic.

Have you any thoughts on what could cause this? It seems odd that it is mainly anti spyware programs that are being disabled whilst others Anti spyware programes are not affected such as SpyBot S&D and SuperAntiSpyware.

Also I get an AVG ANTI SPYWARE 7.5 message Box at startup saying, 'Connection to service failed - Please reinstall AVG Antispyware 7.5'. I've uninstalled it, rebooted and re-installed and the programe works for a few days and then I get the message box up again?

Hi,

1.) Go to Start, Run, and type msconfig and click OK
2.) If not already selected go to the General tab.
3.) Under Startup Selection select "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services".
4.) Click Apply and then Close.
5.) When given the option, please choose to reboot the computer.
6.) Post a new HJT log when you are done, please.

Hi amateur, I did as you asked. When I click apply, I had a box called System Configuration appear. The message in side the box said as follows,

An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Adinistrator account to make the specified changes.

The account I sign in on has Administrator privileges.

SuperAntiSpyware said a BHO (I think) was attempting to change IE do you want to change the original BHO, I said no.

(both BHO'S where shown as http://www.google.co.uk)

I've just looked in the Services and all the ones that had been disabled are now set on automatic or manual. Great!

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following:

Close all browser and windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

Hi,

I think you've solved it, PC boots up fine with out any error or BHO messages :lol: I've tried surfing ariund a bit using IE and Firefox and have been popup free.
