Another Spyware Protect 2009 attack

18 min read

This thread's last reply is from April 21, 2009, 6:57 PM UTC. Software, malware, and removal-tool advice below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

I got a call this morning from another friend - she has been hit with the Spayware Protect 2009 virus. This is the second this month. Here is the HijackThis log. Please help get this computer fixed. You guys are great! I've got to consider taking the training and get on board with fixing these pests.

Thanks.

Hi, Wes,

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Can you post another HJT log and in notepad uncheck word wrapp (Click format) as it makes it easier to read the log.

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan
Wow, the virus is really impacting internet access. I tried multiple times to submit this and it keeps diverting to a screen that says the machine is being attacked and I should buy Spyware Prevent 2009 for protection. I'm now using sneakernet to get the reports off. Here they are:

Hi,Wes, not good news I'm afraid, this machine has been severly compromised. The backdoor trojan is a banker infostealer see here
Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

My best advise is to backup and reformat.

Dan
Ok- it is in isolation. It was on the same network as several other computers. What should I do to ensure they are not infected? Is there something specific in the HijackThis log I can look for?
This is the line That rang alarm bells for me :bom:
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdra64.exe,

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, << Had this been on it's own the entry it would be fine, not when it's followed by >>(C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdra64.exe,) as it's infected the userinit.exe file which will give you all sorts of problems, userinit.exe is a key process in the Windows operating system. On boot-up it manages the different start up sequences needed, such as establishing network connection and starting up the Windows shell. If you googled userinit.exe you will find some threads saying it's a virus, the important thing to bare in mind is it's location as to whether its a virus or a legitimate file.
Yo will get plenty of practice when you start your studies. :D

I noticed this is running via a proxy server! Is this a company pc?
Thanks, I'll check for that on all my systems.

No, not a company pc, I run an old proxy server, WinProxy, here at home because it provides a universal firewall for the three computers running at home; my desktop, my wife's, and a laptop used for a variety of things, mostly astrophotogray, one of my hobbies. Also, up until last year when support was dropped, it included virus scanning at the proxy level. I've run like this for 6 years without having any virus attacks.

I'd like to find an equivalent replacement, but can't. So each system now runs its own malware protection.
Ok,If one comes to mind I will drop you a post.
Are you happy for me to close this thread up, as mentioned the only way to be sure and trust this machine again is to nuke and reformat. :)
Regards dan
I'll be reformatting the infected system. If I find it has moved to another would I create another thread? If so, then this one should close. If it can stay open until I verify the rest are clean that would be nice - I'm about to run HijackThis on all the systems now.
For a different system It would be better to start a new thread saves confusion :) will leave this a few days more. :)
Good luck with the format.
dan
You can close it - I've done both HijackThis logs and full virus scans on alkl the systems - everything looks clean. The infected system is formatting right now.

Thanks again for your help.
Your welcome :)
