Windows Vista won't run update...

My computer won't run the update module. I click on it and it goes to a white box and never loads. I made the attempt to run it from the website and the website never loads. I did a repair with my vista disk but to no avail. I can't figure it out. I was reading another forum and a microsoft tech said it was possible that he was infected with some sort of bot. I tried this technique:

Start cmd.exe as administrator (right-click and select run as administrator)
> at the command prompt type
> net stop wuauclt
> net stop bits

When I went to stop "wuauclt", it said it could not be found. As for "net stop bits" I get: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service could not be stopped.
