Malware has taken over my PC

Hi,

I've been struggling to remove some malware over the past few days and, thus far, have been loosing the battle. Right now I have no desktop icons, no start bar, and limited permissions in task manager - even when booted into safe mode. I've tried running some malware removal software by starting the programs form the task manager window, but all malware removal programs appear to have been rendered useless. I even tried running some new installs of these programs and changing the names of the executables for those programs, but that did not work either. However, I was able to run HijackThis last night and I've posted the log below.

Additional Info: I'm currently running a desktop PC with Windows XP (service pack 2 I believe) and I typically run new updates as they become availlable. My internet runs through our a wireless router that also serves our laptop computer (which runs Vista and seems to be unaffected thus far). The Desktop PC is connected via an ethernet cable to the router if that makes a difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm at a complete loss!

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
• Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

• Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
• If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
• Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
• As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.


Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:


Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi there,

The first HJT log you posted was actually dated 10/17/2005, and you were running SP2. I did not notice this at first and continued on with getting you to run Combofix.

The second HJT log you posted is current but you are now running SP1?

Can you explain what’s happening here. Have you performed some kind of fresh install? Why is the Service pack so out of date?

To be honest the Product key on the WGA report, turn up pages on google, so I really need to know what is happening.

Sorry for any confusion...

After waiting a few days for a response I ended up running a destructive install from my recovery console. I ran the recovery console before you starting helping me because my PC was completely useless and I was unsure when help would come.

After I ran the new install I let Windows load it's automatic updates (it ran about 80 of them all at once) but I guess it still has more to go. I've turned off the auto update for the time being while you help me, but if desired I can turn it back on to finish the update process.

One thing I did notice was that aftering running the recovery console I reinstalled McAfee, scanned my computer, and it still found a Trojan which surprised me (this too happened before you stared helping me). I thought the destructive install would have erased everything... Is it possible the infection crossed the partion on my hard drive?

As for my first HJT log, I'm unsure why that's dated 2005 - I generated the log right before I made my post.

Latest update:

Got home this evening and started the computer. I opened internet explorer to see if you had replied and Mcafee went nuts with warnings that it was blocking trojans, droppers, etc... There must have been over a dozen blocked before I could do anything. Then my PC restarted on it's own and I now have both Windows Security Center and Antivirus Pro 2010 back on my PC.

I was able to take a few screenshots of my Mcafee once it rebooted and I've attached those below. The list of removed viruses was so long it didn't fit on one screen so there are two shots - one showing the top of the list, and one showing the bottom of the list.

I also, ran a new HijackThis log and have pasted the results below.

I'm at a total loss, I have no idea where this stuff is coming from - especially since I did a destructive recovery the other day... I'm about ready to pull my hair out!

Thanks again for your time helping me out. I obviously can't manage to get rid of this virus myself so if it weren't for your help I'd be pretty much out of luck.

After waiting a few days for a response I ended up running a destructive install from my recovery console

Ok makes sense.

After I ran the new install I let Windows load it's automatic updates (it ran about 80 of them all at once) but I guess it still has more to go. I've turned off the auto update for the time being while you help me, but if desired I can turn it back on to finish the update process.

If we are going to clean, leave them turned off for the time present. There would have been a lot more to come, you computer was at SP1, which makes is very vulnerable as you saw. The latest Service Pack is 3, which is a big download. I would advise not surfing the internet in any way, shape or form until the computer is updated (apart from this forum). You might consider doing another fresh install at this time. Have a think about it. Until your computer is updated you will be at a greater risk for infection.

Is Mcafee an up to date version? Or did it come with the computer initially? If it is an old version it will not help you too much at this stage.

Ok delete the version of Combofix you have on your desktop and re-download the latest from the links and instructions I gave you earlier.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
• Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

It's an up-to-date version I installed from their website. After installation I ran all updates so its virus definitions were current as of late last week.

I need to take off to work right now and will plan to either do a recovery or the steps you outlined below when I get home later today. Which is easiest and quickest for you? I know there are a lot of folks here waiting for your expertise...

I don’t mind helping you, but to be honest since the computer has not much loaded I would opt for another format and fresh install. If you are comfortable with it, then go for it. If you do, you must, must, must update to the current Service pack protection level before you surf or you will get infected as quick as you did.

Good to hear Mcafee , is current and up to date. That is one problem solved.

I do not know where you work, but if they have an IT dept, ask if they have SP3 or even SP2 on a disk, if they do it will save you a lot of time
Just a note too, part of your new installation included what’s below. Both are outdated and the Java version is a vundo magnet. So uninstall and update straight away. I will post the links for you at the bottom of this post.

If you choose to clean, leave auto updates off, as updating on an infected computer will cause major problems. Still ask if your IT dept has SP2 etc, again it will make life easier ONCE the computer is clean.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.

• Go to Java Site
• Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
• In Platform box choose Windows.
• Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
• Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
• Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
• Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.

• Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Sorry it took a while to get back to you I ran another clean install (destructive recovery) and it took a while. I also uploaded all of the available windows updates (up to service pack 3), and ran the updates for Java and Adobe.
