additional typing symbols added when only one symbol key hit

When I type a period (like this: .2) I get the number two.2 It comes and goes.2 Also I get an additional symbol when I type an ampersand: >@.2 This is the case whether I type in a Word document or compose an email or do box fill-ins on a web site.2 Question: Is this invariably a sign of an infected computer or can it be faulty software? Any help or suggestion is appreciated.2
