I have instructions from malwarebytes to turn off system restore when removing infected files. When I go to system restore though, it tells me if I shut it off it also erases all previous system restore points. So I am concerned and thought I'd better ask before doing this. I just might need a restore point after removing so many files.

It's not a good idea to switch off System Restore before running an "auto" removal scan by any tool.
If anything should go wrong during the removal process, and you are left with a malfunctioning machine, you have removed the very thing that may be used to recover your machine. Even an infected System Restore point is better than no Restore Point.
You should only ever remove System Restore points when your machine is finally clear of infection, and not before then.
