I was just wondering why the new forum software has the avatars at the right of the page?

That's because you are using the Prosilver skin.

Click on User Control Panel > Board Preferences.

Select subsilver2 from the My board style: drop-down list and click Submit.

the new skin looks a bit odd, but it's cool :D
