Firefox Updates

I was wondering if this is "common practice" with user's who have a more advanced knowledge of windows updates.

I do know that it is mainly user preference, but i am picking up comments like yours and just wondering if its a good idea to have windows updates set to "notify" myself, now that i am getting a more of an understanding about them.

If you are a basic home user who just surfs the internet, automatic updates is just what he needs.
But if you know a little bit more about them, is the setting "notify" a better option ?

It's a personal choice for me. I don't like autofix tools no matter who makes them. If something is going to start removing files and "fixing" things, then I want to have control over whether it does or not.

I've yet to see an autofixing tool that hasn't acted on at least one false positive, and some of those FPs have rendered people's computers unbootable in the past, so I prefer to use tools that I can control when I'm checking and cleaning my computer of infection.

If Microsoft didn't include the monthly Malicious Removal Tool in with the updates I would probably have my computer set to auto update, as they do then I keep it set to notify only.

Of course for a layman, the risk of their computer being borked by the MRT is much less than that of their machine being screwed by an infection, so I'd always recommend that they have updates set on Auto. Notify only requires you to be very proactive with your updates, and needs a discipline that most laymen don't want to have to practice.

Whether notify only is the option for you, only you can say.

It suits me, but then I had a slow connection for many years, so I got into the habit of "filtering" all updates to select only the ones I needed so that the DL time was as short as possible. I have a fast connection now, but I still check what all updates are for as a matter of course.
